Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Know Your Block iOS application ("the app"), developed by Claire Jellison ("we," "our"). By downloading or using the app, you agree to these Terms.

1. What the app is

Know Your Block is an educational walking companion for New York City's honorary street co-namings: streets officially co-named by the NYC Council to honor notable people. The app presents each honoree's story and lets you record having visited their street in person.

The app is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the City of New York, the NYC Council, the Department of City Planning, Mapbox, OpenStreetMap, or any honoree, honoree's family, or estate.

2. Walk safely — your responsibility

The app is designed to be used while walking in a real city. You are solely responsible for your own safety. By using the app you agree to:

• Stay aware of your surroundings — do not watch the screen while crossing streets;
• Obey all traffic signals, laws, and posted signage;
• Never use the app while driving, cycling, or operating any vehicle;
• Respect private property — no street or story in the app is an invitation to enter

private property, and none of them require it;

• Use your own judgment about visiting any area at any time of day.

You use the app, and make any journey, entirely at your own risk.

3. Accuracy of content

The app's stories and street locations are curated from public records, including NYC Council co-naming records and the NYC Department of City Planning's street-name GIS data. We work to keep them accurate, but:

• Locations may be approximate. Some entries are explicitly marked "Location

approximate — pending verification against NYC records" in the app. For honorary designations spanning long street segments, the map pin marks a representative point, not the whole span.

• Stories are educational summaries, written from publicly available sources, and may

contain errors or omissions.

Content is provided for general informational and educational purposes only. Corrections are welcome at the contact address below.

4. License to use the app

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the app for personal, non-commercial purposes on Apple-branded devices you own or control, subject to these Terms and Apple's App Store terms. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, lease, reverse engineer, or extract the source code of the app or its content, except as permitted by law.

5. Intellectual property

The app's design, text, stories, illustrations, and other original content are owned by Claire Jellison. The honoree portraits are original illustrations created for the app's historical and educational commentary. Honoree names, street names, and biographical facts are matters of public record.

Map data and imagery are © Mapbox and © OpenStreetMap contributors, provided under their own terms. Your use of the map is also subject to the Mapbox Terms of Service.

6. Your data

The app has no accounts and no servers. Your visit progress and settings are stored only on your device, and deleting the app erases them. See the app's Privacy Policy for details.

7. Disclaimer of warranties

THE APP AND ITS CONTENT ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE APP WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR THAT LOCATIONS OR CONTENT ARE ACCURATE OR COMPLETE.

8. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY PERSONAL INJURY, PROPERTY DAMAGE, OR LOSS ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE APP OR YOUR TRAVEL TO OR PRESENCE AT ANY LOCATION SHOWN IN THE APP. WHERE LIABILITY CANNOT BE EXCLUDED, IT IS LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR THE APP.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions or limitations, so parts of the above may not apply to you.

9. Termination

We may suspend or discontinue the app, or these Terms' license, at any time. You may stop using the app at any time by deleting it.

10. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the app after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles.
