Know Your Block

Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 2, 2026

Know Your Block ("the app") is developed by Claire Jellison ("we," "our"). This policy describes what information the app handles and how. The short version: the app has no accounts, no ads, and no analytics of its own, and your progress never leaves your device. The only network activity is the map itself, provided by Mapbox (described below).

What the app stores — on your device only

This data is never transmitted, synced, backed up to our servers (we don't have any), sold, or shared. Deleting the app deletes all of it.

Location

The app asks for "While Using the App" location permission, and uses your location for exactly three things, all on-device:

Your location is processed in memory and is never stored by the app — not even as part of your visit history (a visit record contains only the street's name and the date). The app never requests background ("Always") location access, and it never transmits your location anywhere.

You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings; the app continues to work as a browsable guide without it.

Notifications

Notifications are generated locally on your device when you walk near a street you haven't visited yet. There is no push-notification server. A local notification may still appear on your lock screen or while you're using another app — that is simply iOS displaying a notification your own device created; no server is involved, and nothing about it leaves your phone. (Because the app only uses location while it's in use, it can only notice you're near a street — and thus only create these notifications — while the app is open.) You can decline notification permission, or turn notifications off in the app's Settings tab or iOS Settings, and everything else keeps working.

The map: Mapbox and OpenStreetMap

Map tiles are provided by Mapbox, a third-party service, using data from OpenStreetMap. When the map loads:

Mapbox's handling of this data is governed by the Mapbox Privacy Policy.

Demo Mode

Demo Mode simulates a location so the app can be explored from anywhere. The simulated location is generated and used entirely on-device and has no privacy implications.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone — children or adults.

Your choices and data deletion

Changes to this policy

If the app's data practices ever change, this policy will be updated and the effective date revised. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
